WHAT IS ISPEC©?
ISPEC© is an international, evidence-based
curriculum for teaching all types of healthcare providers to address
their patients’ spiritual needs, particularly during acute and
chronic illness.
Facilitated by global leaders in the field of
spiritual health, you will learn
the fundamentals of integrating spirituality into your daily
healthcare practice.
|
|
A compilation of over two decades of research,
education, and clinical best practices, ISPEC is the core curriculum
at The George Washington University Institute for Spirituality &
Health (GWish).
|
|
ISPEC© BACKGROUND
Launched in 2018, ISPEC© has already begun
developing leaders, mentors, and replicable models of spiritual care
training throughout multiple countries. As the program continues to
grow, we envision a future where all clinicians,
spiritual care professionals, and other providers in health settings
are equipped to attend to spiritual distress among patients and their
families, particularly those experiencing acute illness or
end-of-life.
We are holding this special ISPEC© to
find partners who are interested in developing ISPEC© in Japan.
|
|
WHO IS ISPEC© FOR?
ISPEC©
offers spiritual care training to all types of clinicians from
diverse professional backgrounds (e.g. MD, RN, NP, PA, Social
Work, Psychology, PT/OT/ST).
|
|
ISPEC©will be presented in English
and translated into Japanese.

REFLECTIONS
FROM AN ISPEC© PARTICIPANT
“We have had several teams go through the ISPEC© curriculum—pediatric
oncology, neurosurgery, rehab, adult palliative care, and pediatric residents.
We found that discussing patient spirituality together helped us take better
care of patients and form deeper bonds with each other across disciplines—physicians,
nurses, APPs, social work, child life, therapists, and chaplains. When we take care of the human
spirit in others, we take care of ourselves, and ISPEC© provides
tools to do this in an inclusive way. We are looking forward
to seeing how we can deepen our use of ISPEC training at our
institution in the years to come. I highly recommend it!”
— Alex Lion, DO MPH,
Assistant Professor, Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology,
Indiana University School of Medicine & Riley Hospital for
Children

We believe spiritual care as part of whole person care is a human right.
To that end, ISPEC© is an innovative, powerful way to bring spiritual care training to health
care systems around the world.

ISPEC©: Spiritual Care Training for Doctors, Nurses, Chaplains, Social Workers,
Psychologists —All Types of Practitioners
Interprofessional Spiritual Care Education Curriculum (ISPEC©) is an international, evidence-based curriculum for teaching all types
of health care providers to address their patients’ spiritual needs in
a daily health care practice. Designed to be taken together with an area
chaplain or spiritual director, ISPEC is a compilation of over two decades
of research, education, and clinical best practices.
Launched in 2018, ISPEC© has already begun developing leaders, mentors, and replicable models of
spiritual care training throughout multiple countries. As the program continues
to grow, we envision a future where all clinicians, spiritual care professionals, and other providers in health
settings are equipped to attend to spiritual distress among patients and
their families, particularly those experiencing acute illness or end-of-life.
We would like to acknowledge Dr. Betty Ferrell, ISPEC© co-director and our partner organizations for their passionate engagement
and support. We would also like to thank the Fetzer Institute for their
support and initial funding for the development of the ISPEC program.
